Best in the galaxy
When Galaxy on Fire 2 was released almost a year ago it seemed like a pretty big leap forward in space trading/combat games, both graphically and in the scope of the game world presented to players.
Since then, many gamers have travelled with Keith T Maxwell on his time travelling trip through various galaxies in a bid to get home. But time has also brought us new technology, the iPhone 4's retina screen and the A5 chip of the iPad 2 and iPhone 4S providing developers with more scope for graphical manipulation.
Galaxy on Fire 2 HD takes advantage of this new hardware to display the game world in a much more detailed way. The background graphics have been updated, textures improved on all the ships and many impressive effects have been added to ensure this version sits among the best looking iPhone apps of all time.
The game itself is, for the most part, unchanged from the original Galaxy on Fire 2 that we so adored back in November 2010 and you can read what we thought of that right here. The graphical improvement is significant, though, and I'd argue that it improves the quality of the gameplay in return.
That said, those who have made the trip through space with the original, especially with the retina updates and with the add-on, Valkyrie, may want to reverse their thrusters on purchasing the game again. With no current support for Valkyrie and no real additional content it's hard to recommended this to those who have exhausted the game already, other than as a title that really shows what the iPhone 4S is capable of (and it does this perfectly).
If you're a newcomer, though, prepare to be blown away by one of the best games currently on the app store, both in terms of presentation and gameplay. Galaxy on Fire 2 HD is one step closer to a full console quality game on your iOS device and a title any new iPhone 4S owner should have in their collection.
