Four Predictions for the App Store in 2010
by Jamin Smith on Monday 4th Jan 2010

The AppGamer crystal ball is touch screen too

2009 saw the first full year of gaming on Apple’s plucky little touch screen device, with mobile phone games taking a quantum leap both in terms of scale and quality. We saw hundreds of fantastic games such as Rolando, Zen Bound, Real Racing and N.O.V.A – games that proved that the iPhone is a platform to be reckoned with in the handheld market. With the iPhone now basking in the warm light shining from the spotlight of the games industry, what can we expect from the App Store in 2010? We’ve whacked out our crystal ball to answer that very question, offering four predictions as to what 2010 has in store for the gamers.

1. The Rise of Augmented Reality Gaming

A few games in 2009 dabbled with Augmented Reality, and although weren’t terrible, failed to make an impact of any kind. Firefighter 360 (pictured below) saw players tackling raging fires in the real world using the power of the iPhone 3GS and it’s camera. There was also Pandemica, which brought an arcade-style shooter into the real world. On paper, games like this are very exciting, and offer a totally new and unique experience. What the iPhone needs is its first killer augmented reality app, and we’d bet that it’s already being conjured up by some talented developer somewhere.

2. More Console Franchises

A monkey could predict this, but it’s a point worth raising nonetheless. Last year the iPhone was treated to Assassins Creed, Need For Speed, Resident Evil, Metal Gear Solid and Sonic the Hedgehog, amongst others. As more and more big developers are getting on board, 2010 will undoubtedly see more big franchises finding their way onto iPhone. Mirrors Edge, GTA Chinatown Wars and Phoenix Wright are all confirmed to be hitting the App Store shortly, but this article isn’t about certainties, it’s about unfounded and idle speculation. Here’s just a few titles that we reckon will be available before the end of the year.

SEGA Rally

Tomb Raider

Prince of Persia

A Final Fantasy Title (perhaps Tactics?)

Blue Dragon (We already know Mistwalker are developing a game for iPhone)

Splinter Cell
