Double Take: Crayon Physics Deluxe
by Chris Thomas on Tuesday 13th Apr 2010

Miss this game and miss out on one of the best iPhone games in the App Store.

Double Take is a feature where we pick out iPhone games that came out a long time ago and no longer receive the attention they truly deserve. With so many people picking up iPhone's and iPod Touches we'd hate to see these titles get overlooked.

Crayon Physics Deluxe. What. A. Game. It really is a stunning piece of interactive entertainment, the goal is so simple and yet the way you achieve said goal can be as elegent or as complex as your brain will allow you to concieve. Each level gives you a circle (over which you have no direct control) and your task is to make the circle touch a star placed somewhere else on the screen. You do this by drawing shapes with your finger which then become corporeal and interact with the environment. For instance I could draw a triangle and then a horizontal line across the peak which would then create a rudimentary see saw. With the circle on the dipped end all I would have to do is draw a big circle over the raised end to catapult the circle into the air. It's genius.

An example as plucked from our 9/10 review...

"I was able to complete an early level by drawing a small circle on a cloud, this acted as a pivot for a huge hammer I drew around it. The hammer swung down thanks to our old pal gravity, smashed into the circle that then launched off the ramp I had drawn earlier eventually bouncing off a wall and colliding with the star. Mission complete. It took two to three minutes of careful planning, staring at the screen in silence constructing in my mind all kinds of strange possibilities. It culminated in maybe 3 seconds of on screen action. That is what makes this game not only so incredibly innovative but also immensely satisfying in a way very few games have been before."

The game is currently £2.99. I realise that this may seem a fairly steep asking price for a title that doesn't have Gameloft or EA's name attached but believe me when I say that this exquisite and addictive gaming of the highest calibre. If you must have a comparison stick this up their with Angry Birds and Peggle in the "must keep playing" stakes. It's just that good.

Pretty insightful post. Never thought that it was this simple after all. I had spent a good deal of my time looking for someone to explain this subject clearly and you’re the only one that ever did that. Kudos to you! Keep it up
