Game Of The Month: April
by Staff on Friday 1st May 2009

Our pick for this months' finest

After a solid month of iDevice gaming, with numerous triple A titles that were released in April; it was only right that we decided to commence our Game of the Month awards during this month of somewhat epic pocket gaming proportions.  To say the least, we were happy with April. After a period of time conferring amongst ourselves, we have chosen to award a game that deservingly justifies AppGamer’s Game of the Month title; this is the best of April’s best.

Without further ado..

It seems like only yesterday that we reviewed Pixel Mine’s Underworlds and awarded it with a prestigious 9. Wait, it was yesterday. Lucky for the action RPG; it was written just in time for it to be included in April’s batch of games. It’s been a big month, and Underworlds did have to go toe-to-toe with a certain crime'em up and a big brand title in Assassins' Creed, but to us this stood out amongst the rest of the pack. Ousting 2XL Games’ 2XL Supercross, now a benchmark for anything visual on the iDevice, and TAG Games’ highly anticipated Car Jack Streets, is an action RPG that provided what RPG/dungeon crawler fans had been waiting for on the App Store – the Diablo-esque Underworlds. Sure people had doubts of an RPG game functioning on the system properly, but they soon followed suit and were equally as impressed as we were by Pixel Mine’s first offering.

The game looks gorgeously atmospheric, and plays even better. With a vast amount of ways to customize your medieval hero, and different quests to take, this game nearly excels in all areas. One of the things we didn't mention in the review was that it’s one of the first games on the iDevice to grab our attention and allow us to immerse ourselves in the game’s world. And I think this is what Underworlds does best. From the moment you launch the application on your springboard, it creates a dark, gloomy world for you to play in. Journeying around dungeons and many other unique locales always yields an element of surprise. Whether it be encountering an NPC, a rare item or a mere ghoul appearing out of a dark corner, it’s always enjoyable to find something you hadn’t encountered before.

Yes, we hear you. The lack of music, the length of the game and some other complaints you might have addressed before. But as it may be, this is why Underworlds is just that good. Even in the absence of music, it’s still one of the tensest experiences you’ll have on your silverback system. If Galcon’s 3 minute experience can call you to play again and again, we're sure the 3-5 hour experience you’ll have in one difficulty setting will encourage you to play through it again. The game has not crashed on us; neither has it presented any sort of technical problem while we were playing through it. This game sets the standard for future role playing games, and with the (very promising) 1.1 update coming soon, this beautifully realized game doesn’t belong anywhere else but the top of your To Buy list.

You can read our complete review of Underworlds here. And if you're still not convinved that this is a Must Buy title, check out two, never before published screenshots of the game below.
