Welcome to the launch of our new weekend feature.
The premise of this new regular feature is simple ; we select 3 upcoming releases in the App Store and open up the floor for discussion as we make calculated guesstimates on whether the game will be ‘hot’ or ‘not’. Just remember that the final word isn’t based on any hands-on time with the games, but pure speculation of the games’ current potential. With that said, sit back and enjoy this new addition to the weekend editorial.

Dirt Moto Racing
By the time this feature article is published, Resolution Interactive’s latest offering will probably be out in the App Store worldwide already. Not only do the visuals look impressive; Dirt Moto Racing offers a Wi-Fi component which we’ve pretty much been crossing our fingers for from a racer. No, it’s not online real-time races; but it definitely is the next best thing developers can conjure up. Premium racing titles such as NFS: Undercover and Real Racing didn’t have it, but Dirt Moto Racing does, and we’re pretty glad it’s been incorporated. Instead of racing against times clocked in by other players around the world; you actually get to race their ‘ghosts’ ala Mirror’s Edge’s time trial mode. In effect, this allows gamers to actually race a tangible ‘ghost time’ recorded by rivals in a physical form. You’re no longer racing a ticking timer, but a foe in an ATV. There are over 36 unique events and 5 game modes to play in while you do all sorts of stunts, tricks and drifts unseen by any other racer in the App Store; it sounds good on paper and looks great in the game’s trailer – we’re sold.

Occurro!
With so many Geometry Wars clones and twin stick shooters flooding the App Store; we’re not so sure Occurro! will stand a chance. Visually, the game doesn’t look overtly awesome. It looks cool; but it won’t raise any standards. Instead of a brand new, polished game; it looks a lot more like a Nano Fighter 2.0. We have our doubts, and with Isotope locking down the competition with its in-depth mechanics, Occurro! doesn’t seem to offer anything new. Obviously the game isn’t out yet, and everything is mere speculation. But judging by the trailer, screenshots and what the developers have said; if you own the other clones there’s probably no need to go out and buy Acceleroto’s upcoming release. But hey, it’ll sell for $0.99 USD approximately next week so if you enjoy a cheap twin-stick shooting romp by all means go ahead. Though for now, we’re predicting a pass for yet another GW clone.

Minigore
We’ve been keeping an eye on this one for a while, and so have every other twin-stick shooter fans out there. Yes, it helps that AppGamer’s Senior Editor Jeff Effendi was selected as a finalist for their tagline contest, but it doesn’t change the fact that Mountain Sheep’s debut looks peculiarly unique. It has a quirky, distinct style straight from a brooding comic book; not Punisher-menacing, but atmospheric enough to set it apart from the Rolandos and Rasta Monkeys of the App Store. It has an interesting enough premise, with protagonist John Gore finding himself in a bit of a pickle. Apart from blasting baddies in the Hardland, flashback scenes from Gore’s cranium sets to take players into a different setting – an icy Alaska-looking arena to be exact. While the art design looks whacky; gameplay seems questionable. It looks to be an arena shooter without depth, and truthfully we’re not expecting much from the gun-toting game. Are there any pickups, power-ups or perks? Who knows; with so much hype behind it, let’s just assume that the developers will pull it off in the end. We’re still giving it a stamp of approval though; give them the benefit of the doubt per se.
