The Top 10 iPhone Games of 2009
by Jamin Smith on Thursday 17th Dec 2009

The article 2009 has been building towards is finally here.

8. Ravensword: The Fallen King, Crescent Moon Games, Chillingo

With the J-RPG side of the genre covered by Gamevil’s Zenonia, Crescent Moon Games offered an altogether more western take on the RPG with Ravensword: The Fallen King. With its bordering on console quality graphics and hundreds of hours of gameplay, Ravensword brought a mini Elder Scrolls into the palm of your hands. With more weapons, armour and items than you can shake a sword at, Ravensword offers a level of depth that embarrasses your average iPhone game. If the likes of Oblivion or Lord of the Rings float your boat, Ravensword is just what the doctor ordered.

From our review:

"In many ways Ravensword reaches beyond the limitations of its native hardware and you could argue that this is its one true downfall. If you can look past the poor draw distance, and you should, you will find an irresistible leviathan of a game."

7. Zen Bound, Secret Exit

The whole notion of wrapping a wooden animal in rope is a peculiar notion indeed, but that is the exact premise of Secret Exit’s award winning Zen Bound. With amazing visuals and an even better soundtrack, Zen Bound is more than just a mere game; it’s a meditative experience. Secret Exit likens it to popping bubble-wrap, or peeling the label off a bottle, and it’s easily as satisfying as either. Zen Bound wouldn’t be possible on any other format, it’s a game the iPhone can proudly display in it’s portfolio, and one that anybody looking for a refreshing and original experience should snap up without a moments hesitation.

From our review:

"Zen Bound has joined an elite selection of must have games on the iPhone.  A thoughtful, deep, and bordering on spiritual game, that everybody with an iPhone or iPod touch should experience. Zebound is gaming nirvana."

Love Monkey Island, hated the controls of the port. Still brilliant though, and has hopefully started a resurgence in adventures with Steel Sky and All Fridges are Psychotic, etc.

Holy cow! Thank you! We are truly honored. BTW, we just released our free Director's Cut update with 10 new levels, 24 new achievements, and other assorted goodies, so now there is even more for you to enjoy :) We've also got a free holiday present in the pipe at Apple, so hopefully we will have that to share soon as well. cheers, David Tiger Style

Just want to give a big shout out to CS.one, creator shay. He had probably one of the worst launches ever, and yet there are those of us who found the beauty of CS.one to much to be ignored. It's control is so fluid and graceful,..unfortunately however, many found the very same controls to be the games downfall. Even now when you ask you'll get those that drool like retarded fan boys, and those who never really got it. I'm proudly a member of the former, and hope Shay's still kicking it on the appstore....somewhere.

Also I'd like to add that no game is more deserving of being named game of 2009 then spider!! It really is a masterpiece of gaming.

This list is the worst I have scene so for I am not sure that any one of those apps should be on this list this screams lame sellout. Removing this blog from my rss.

Fair enough -- you're just as entitled to your opinion as we are. Key word here being opinion. We didn't make this list to please publishers, we made it to honour good game design, and on reflection, we think we've got a nice cross section of the App Store's finest. Top 10 lists are a very subjective thing my friend, all we did was offer our opinion. We'd be interested to hear your top 10 though, where did we go wrong? What SHOULD be on our list?
