For the geniuses in all of us, waiting to bust a move.
I used to play a lot of Tetris, and I was a Sudoku fanatic, but nether really excites me anymore. So I set out to find a game that not only appealed to my love of mathematics, but which also required the quick reflexes of Tetris. In this article, I will give you a brief overview of five number-related apps that I found in my quest for something new. You may already be familiar with some of these apps, but others you may have missed. Without further ado, here they are (in no particular order):
Big Top 10
This fun circus-themed game is by one of my favorite developers, Bight Games. In Big Top 10, the goal is to make sums of '10' by dragging your finger over neighboring numbers in the 5x5 game grid. When you total 10, these numbers are removed and new numbers appear in their place. The game keeps going until the clock runs out. There are both positive and negative numbers, as well as all sorts of power ups, like a bomb (which gets rid of all the numbers around it), a clock to stop the game timer and more.
One really nice feature is that it does all the adding for you in real-time, so you can see what the current total (of your selected numbers) is without having to do the math in your head.
The game is extremely fast paced and very addictive. It offers OpenFeint support, along with global leaderboards, Wi-Fi versus mode and achievements. The graphics and sound and sound are crisp and whimsical. Its only $0.99 and a free lite version is available for you to try out.

DownToZero (soon to be Countdown)
If subtraction is more your computation of choice, then take a look at DownToZero by Hondune Games. In DownToZero, numbered blocks are constantly falling down from the top of the screen (a la Tetris), and you must drag your finger on collections of boxes the form sums of zero. So for instance, you could start by touching a '4' and then drag your finger onto a '2' and another '2' and then these three blocks will disappear (since 4-2-2=0), making room for new falling blocks. Or you could touch a '2' and drag your finger to another '2', and these will disappear.
There are four different game modes including Endless (just keep playing and racking up points), 1 and 3 minute attack modes (where you try to accumulate the most points in the allotted time) and finally a "Clear The Board" mode. The variety of game modes offer good deal of flexibility depending on how much time you have available. There is also global leader boards, specifically for each game mode. I also found DownToZero to be quite addicting, especially the short 1 minute attack mode, the ultimate in "just one more time" fun.
We just got word that with the v1.3 release, this game is changing names to "Countdown", and will have a completely new visual style and icon. In contrast to the fantastic gameplay, the graphics in DownToZero were a little bland, so I'm really excited to hear that this is going to be revamped, making this fun game even better. It is available for just $0.99 cents, no lite version is currently available. If you can't find it under the name DownToZero, make sure to look for Countdown.
